I was about to give up on this series, but now I will be able to finish. Emma finally admits that she has spent her whole adult life believing in the fairy tale of Tom the father of her son. I was so sick of it I had sworn off the last few books. These do need to be read in order or you'll be lost with all the characters. Another death in the local low-class tavern--but this one was witnessed by so many people that it has to be open and shut, right?
It is until Emma starts asking questions. But she gets distracted by Milo's reconciliation with Old Mulehide. I picked this book off the shelf not knowing what to expect. I can't keep track of all the characters and I'm in the first chapter. I think this is a book for another time.

Browse Browse, collapsed Browse. Picturesque Alpine is no longer the brawling logging town of yesteryear.
The inquiry into the incident should be a no-brainer, but since the witnesses were half-tanked at the time, Sheriff Milo Dodge is left with conflicting stories. Rumors are flying: Are the two tragedies linked in some inexplicable way? Emma, however, thinks that the witnesses' statements don't quite add up, especially when they're followed by a traffic accident that kills the nephew of the local grocery store owners.
Emma learns that the nephew was high on cocaine and other drugs at the time, suggesting that a dealer is active in the area perhaps someone she knows. Complicating the case is Emma's uneasy relationship with Sheriff Milo Dodge and her catfight with an area floozy that may result in a lawsuit. Though it can be a bit challenging to keep track of the many town personalities, Daheim's premise that random occurrences are connected keeps the reader turning the pages.
